We organized a memorable walking tour through a vineyard estate nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean wine region. This landscape has been shaped by local cultures for thousands of years, with evidence of wine trade in the area predating Roman civilization.
Walking through the vineyards is the best way to understand why so many civilizations have chosen this fertile land to settle. The rich soils, favorable climate, and abundant cultivation of wheat, fruits, vegetables, olives, and grapes make it an ideal region for wine production.
A Journey Through History and Nature
Our journey began at a mystic chapel situated in the middle of the vineyards, dating back to the Middle Ages. This chapel, now part of the family-owned winery estate, can be visited upon request. The image of the sun shining through the bell tower beautifully illustrates the harmony between history, nature, and architecture.
One of the highlights of this excursion was learning about dry stone construction—Barraques de Pedra Seca—a traditional technique used for building structures without cement. These stone shelters, built around 200 years ago, were used by vineyard workers to protect themselves from the sun and storms. Unfortunately, many of these historic structures have been lost due to abandoned vineyards, but their restoration is a vital part of our ongoing conservation efforts.
Throughout the walk, we stopped to admire these stone constructions, each telling a story of the region’s rich wine heritage. One stop offered a stunning panoramic view of the Penedès Valley, the Montserrat mountain range, and even the Mediterranean Sea.
Walking Among Centuries-Old Olive Trees
Along the way, we also passed magnificent olive trees, some of which are several hundred or even thousands of years old. These ancient trees are not only a part of the landscape but are also integral to the region’s history and culture.
Wine Tasting Experience
The tour concluded with a visit to the cellar of the winery estate, where we explored the barrel room and enjoyed a tasting session of the estate's wide range of premium wines.
